Health and Safety policy
Health and Safety Policy for South Kensington Man and Van
South Kensington Man and Van is committed to providing a professional removals and transport service that prioritises the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, contractors and the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our principles and practical measures for managing risks associated with moving, loading, transportation and delivery of household and commercial goods.
Policy Aims and Responsibilities
The aim of this policy is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health arising from our removal and man and van activities. We will provide a safe working environment, safe systems of work and appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision.
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who ensure that adequate resources are made available to implement this policy. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day compliance on jobs, including safe loading, use of equipment and adherence to lifting procedures. All employees and workers share responsibility for taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We will identify, assess and manage health and safety risks associated with our activities. This includes risks related to manual handling, working in customers premises, vehicle movements, loading and unloading, and the use of tools and equipment.
Prior to each removal or transport job, our staff will consider specific risks such as access routes, stairs and lifts, parking constraints, heavy or awkward items, and any fragile or hazardous items being moved. Where necessary, dynamic risk assessments will be carried out on site to address unforeseen hazards. Control measures will be implemented to reduce risks so far as is reasonably practicable.
Safe systems of work are developed for regular tasks, including lifting and carrying, securing loads in vehicles, operating lifting aids and using protective equipment. These systems are reviewed regularly and updated where changes to our work or equipment occur.
Manual Handling and Load Safety
Manual handling is a core element of removal work and represents a significant source of potential injury. To minimise the risk of strains, sprains and other musculoskeletal injuries, all staff involved in lifting and carrying will receive manual handling training appropriate to their role.
Team members are instructed to assess each lift before starting, use team lifting for heavy or bulky items, and make use of trolleys, dollies and other lifting aids where possible. Unsafe techniques such as twisting while lifting or overreaching with heavy items are prohibited. Loads must be broken down into smaller, manageable components where reasonably practicable.
When loading vehicles, items must be stacked safely and secured to prevent movement during transport. Heavy items are placed low and evenly distributed to maintain vehicle stability. Straps and other securing devices are used to prevent loads from shifting, reducing risks to staff, customers and other road users.
Vehicle and Driving Safety
Our vehicles are essential to our removal and man and van services, and we are committed to maintaining them in a safe and roadworthy condition. Regular inspections and servicing are carried out in line with manufacturer recommendations and legal requirements.
Only authorised and competent drivers may operate company vehicles. Drivers must hold a valid licence for the class of vehicle they are using and follow all road traffic regulations. They are responsible for performing basic daily vehicle checks, reporting defects promptly and ensuring that loads are properly secured before departure.
Journey planning takes account of routes, traffic, parking and time pressures to reduce the risk of accidents and driver fatigue. Drivers are expected to drive considerately and safely at all times, with particular care when manoeuvring near customers premises and public spaces.
Workplace and Customer Premises Safety
Our work takes place in a variety of environments including homes, offices, storage facilities and other premises. We take reasonable steps to ensure that work areas are kept as safe as possible during removals.
Pathways are kept clear of trip hazards such as packing materials and tools. Where appropriate, protective coverings may be used on floors and surfaces to prevent damage and reduce slip risks. Staff will take care when moving large items through doorways, stairways and narrow passages, communicating clearly within the team to coordinate movements and avoid injuries.
We are committed to respecting customers property and ensuring that our activities do not create unnecessary hazards for household members, employees or visitors. Children and pets should be kept away from the immediate working area during loading and unloading.
Training, Information and Supervision
South Kensington Man and Van provides appropriate health and safety training to employees relevant to their role, including induction training for new staff and refresher training where required. Topics may include manual handling, use of equipment, safe driving practices, accident reporting and emergency procedures.
Supervisors and experienced team members provide ongoing guidance and oversight during jobs, ensuring that agreed safe systems of work are followed. Safety information is communicated clearly and staff are encouraged to raise concerns or suggest improvements to working practices.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses that occur during our work must be reported to management as soon as practicable. This includes injuries, vehicle incidents and damage to property. Accurate records are kept to help identify patterns and prevent recurrence.
In the event of an accident or emergency, staff are required to prioritise the safety of all persons involved, make use of first aid provisions where appropriate and contact emergency services when necessary. Following any significant incident, we will review circumstances, update risk assessments and adjust procedures as needed.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
We recognise that effective health and safety management depends on the involvement of the whole team. We encourage staff to share feedback on practical safety issues encountered during removal work and to contribute ideas for safer methods and equipment.
This policy and related risk assessments are reviewed regularly to ensure they remain current and effective for our removal and man and van services. Where improvements are identified, we will implement changes and communicate them to all relevant personnel.
Policy Review and Commitment
South Kensington Man and Van is committed to continually improving our health and safety performance. This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, legislation or best practice guidance.
By working together to follow this policy, we aim to deliver a reliable removal service while safeguarding the wellbeing of our staff, customers and the wider community.
